A SUSPECTED drink driver was caught out when he decided to take his car to the jet wash at three o'clock in the morning.

Burnley Magistrates Court heard how lonely David Cooper, 36, had been drinking at home with only his dog for company.

Cooper, who has a previous conviction for a drink driving related offence, was given a 12 month community rehabilitation order to attend the Think First programme. He was banned for three years.

The defendant, of Newchurch Road, Stacksteads, admitted failing to provide a specimen of breath.

Joanne Shahzada, prosecuting, told the court police found the defendant with the engine running and sitting in the driver's seat of his car.

He smelled strongly of drink and was taken to the police station where he became more and more aggressive.

Cooper refused three attempts by police to get him to provide a breath test and squared up to and threatened an officer.

The court was told Cooper had spent the evening alone with his dog which was his only company. A lonely figure, he was on incapacity benefits and going through an aimless period in his life.
