BLACKPOOL Airport and its use by Lancashire's businesses is the focus of a new study by a regional business organisation.

Leyland based Lancashire West Partnership (LWP), which supports Lancashire's economic regeneration, is researching what it calls the 'latent demand' for the airport from Lancashire's businesses.

LWP's survey looks at the locations, types and sizes of businesses most likely to use Blackpool Airport, and what they think of Blackpool Airport compared to other North West airports.

The study also assesses the level and type of demand businesses could put on the West Lancashire airport.

The study's findings will then be used by Blackpool Airport Business Group officials to help them develop the airport's marketing strategy.

Over the past 12 months, Blackpool Airport has gained a number of additional routes -- notably Ryanair's London Stansted and Dublin services -- and has reached an 'important phase in its development' according to LWP.

"We have had an excellent response to the questionnaire so far, demonstrating the high level of interest in Blackpool Airport from the region's business community," said Peter Thomas, LWP's investment research officer.

"According to latest research, proximity to an airport is increasingly a key factor in the location decisions of businesses. Therefore, it is important that Blackpool Airport is proactive in increasing both the number of routes and passenger numbers."

He said the presence of a 'viable business airport' for West Lancashire would increase the likelihood of businesses moving to, or staying, in the area.

And the airport could also play a key role in securing the development and success of resort casinos, he added.

The results of the study are expected to be made available later this month.
