I HAVE to say that I am in favour of the speed cameras staying. Why should it be necessary for people to die or be critically injured before a speed camera is put in place?
You quote Mr Darling as saying that cameras 'can be installed if there was a fear there could be a serious accident.' If people obeyed the speed limits imposed on all roads all the time, there would be far less chance of accidents.
Having speed cameras in place does precisely that: keeps people watching their speed and obeying the speed signs.
There may be an element of 'exploitation of the general public' as Adrian Shurmer states, but that 'exploitation' is only caused because some drivers still refuse to adhere to speed limits on roads. They are already breaking the law, so what is wrong with them paying for it.
Money out of their pocket now may save a life later on. What is more important, fines or lives?
Since the speed cameras have been installed in Blackburn and surrounding areas, I have noticed how much more safely and slowly people drive. It makes me feel safer both as a driver and as a pedestrian.
I look forward to seeing the results of your survey.
B A RALPH (Mrs), Whinney Lane, Blackburn.
