I READ with interest your article concerning the siting of speed cameras in East Lancashire and was glad to find a newspaper prepared to highlight what most motorists have been saying: that the majority of cameras are solely for the purpose of raising revenue and not for saving lives.
I consider them just another stealth tax imposed on the general public.
After looking down the list you published, I noticed a few cameras in the Burnley area where I live, were missing.
1. Blackburn Road, Padiham next to the cemetery. Sited just before 40mph speed limit. I drive past very regularly and cannot remember a single reported accident.
2. Trafalgar Street, Burnley. A busy road with traffic lights at both ends and a busy garage in the middle. The traffic moves slowly most times of the day.
3. Burnley Road, near Dugdale Avenue. It is sited next to a bus stop. No serious accidents or fatalities reported.
I was really surprised to find one of the criteria for a possible site was the 1500 metres used for measuring accidents. Do most of your readers realise that this is nearly a mile? Road and traffic conditions can change considerately in that distance.
I am not against the use of well placed cameras outside schools and at notorious accident blackspots, but to use them just to raise money is just as bad as the ever increasing Council Tax rip-off that we all have to bear.
CLIVE PRATT, Russell Terrace, Padiham.
