A 10-YEAR plan to help relieve congestion and improve safety on the M6 motorway has been unveiled.

The strategy by the Highways Agency covers the motorway from junction 20 in Warrington, through Lancashire and up to the Scottish Borders.

A study by the Highways Agency looked at where accidents regularly occurred, stretches of the road that are regularly congested and slip roads which are in need of improvement.

And following the extensive research the Agency was able to produce its strategy.

Dave Clark, the Highways Agency project manager, said: "The M6 is a strategic route linking the North West and other parts of the UK and Europe.

"The strategy has looked at what the road does now, and examined what needs to be done in the future.

"The emphasis is making the best of what we already have."

For Lancashire the plan includes developing a diversion strategy between junctions 22 and 29 at Bamber Bridge in the event of a major incident, junction improvements at junction 34 near Lancaster and a review of junction 32 at Broughton to address seasonal congestion, weaving movements and safety concerns.
