A NEW scheme is set to boost Colne by helping unemployed people to become volunteers so they can learn new skills and find work.
The Open Door Community Development Project, based at the town's Open Door centre, will also work with existing volunteers and groups to promote regeneration in the town.
Vivary Bridge and Waterside wards, where the problem is higher than average, will be the main focus of the campaign.
Volunteering opportunities will be provided for at least 25 people over two years. Opportunities will also be provided for ex-offenders and people with special needs.
Placements will include administration, serving in the Open Door Cafe, operating a till, preparing food and drink and planning and preparing buffets.
Some of the people who take part will be able to earn certificates in food hygiene, catering, first aid and firefighting.
As well as helping individuals improve their skills and confidence, the scheme will also help community groups who will have more volunteer help.
Project workers Ann McIvor and Lisa Parkin will also help groups by raising awareness, lending equipment, giving formal advice and encouraging informal networking.
The scheme has been funded until 2005 by a £157,000 grant from Pendle Partnership's European regeneration programmes.
Project manager Brian Holmes said: "The project will help people in need to take an active role and develop local projects which improve their living and economic circumstances and help them re-engage with society."
Pendle Partnership's European Regional Development Fund programme officer Andy Wilson said: "There is a big need for 'capacity building' work among community and voluntary groups in Colne which this project will help to deliver.
"The project will increase the number of people who are volunteering, give work experience to disadvantaged people and help people find work."
