AS a pedestrian I would have thought that the fact that speed cameras are making a vast profit was a valid reason for increasing their number rather than scrapping them.
After all, they only generate income because thousands of motorists think they are exempt from keeping the law. Pedestrians tend to develop an instinct for gauging when it is safe to cross the road and an inconsiderate motorist who travels well in excess of the speed limit puts them at risk.
Motorists who I have spoken to seem to think that because their car is capable of travelling at high sped the law should be changed to allow them to do so. Well, I for one would rather see manufacturers made to restrict the power output of their cars so that they can only travel at 30mph.
Roll on the day when they place cameras at traffic lights and start prosecuting those who go through at amber and red; no doubt they will complain this is unfair as well.
If motorists think it is fair that they should be exempt from the law would they accept that I should also be exempt if I take my frustration out on illegally parked cars on pavements and crossings?
No doubt shortly we will be told how unfair we are being in prosecuting motorists who break the law about mobile phones.
