AMBITIOUS plans to transform colliery wasteland in Leigh into a retail and business park are a step nearer to becoming a reality.
The scheme to redevelop 34 acres of the former Parsonage pit site behind Asda superstore off Atherleigh Way is being welcomed with open arms by locals with one reservation -- traffic.
The Brookhouse Group has submitted plans to build business units, car showrooms, non-food retail units and a drive through restaurant but
site access -- currently being reviewed by Wigan Council -- has caused delays in the planning process.
Chip shop owner Glenn Hitchen, who runs a business in Wigan Road, says the feedback from customers about the development is positive, but many people are concerned about how the roads will cope.
Glenn said: "People realise that the town needs a boost and most are all for the project to get the town on its feet because its hasn't recovered since the mine and mill days.
"But they must put in the proper infrastructure. Access is proposed via the road off the by-pass to Asda -- with a new bridge at the back of Patak's -- and also via the 'kamikaze' roundabout at Twist Lane.
"Whatever happens the traffic management people have to come forward with new plans about the congestion problems at the Sportsman junction."
