GRANDMA Liz MacMahon decided she wanted something different for her 50th birthday -- a jewel of a concert to help sick children.
Now she has seen her wish come true. A GEM appeal evening has been organised to raise money for research into rare life threatening genetic and metabolic disorders in youngsters.
Her three-years-old grand daughter Libby Hodgson was born with PKU (Phenylketonuria) a condition which without treatment could result in infants developing mental retardation or additional neurological symptoms.
Instead of throwing a party for herself Liz, of Robertshaw Street, decided to celebrate with a first fund raiser for the Gem (Genetics, Emzymes Metabolism) Appeal at the Royal Manchester Children's Hospital where Libby is treated.
She and two friends Pauline Bassett and Anne Scotson have organised the event at St Paul's Labour Club at 8pm on Sunday, February 15, and the party is open to everyone.
Libby's mum Jenna, 18, of Clifton Street, Leigh, said her daughter's condition was diagnosed from a blood test at birth.
She said: "It has made life more difficult because Libby cannot eat meat, fish or poultry, dairy products or anything made with flour.
"She has a strict diet and I have to bake bread with low protein flour which I get on prescription.
"Thankfully she can eat a few chips and things like vegetable soup."
"I think my mum's idea for a fund raising concert instead of a birthday party is brilliant and I'm sure we will keep on fund raising in the future."
Tickets (£1) for the concert are available from the club or ring Anne on 01942 745059 or 01942 512532.
