LEIGH Harriers RL fought bravely but were beaten 68-10 by Bank Quay Bulls who have not lost a game for two seasons.
The Harriers have been struggling over the last few games due to a spate of injuries and illnesses. But these setbacks have not affected morale and the spirit within the team is excellent.
With only 12 players, the Harriers were always going to struggle against Bank Quay but the performance offered up by the team, especially in the first 20 minutes was fantastic, defence was tight and in attack the team went close to scoring on a couple of occassions.
After going behind to a couple of converted tries, Harriers hit back with an excellent try from Gary Fishwick, the same player having one disallowed just before half time.
In the second half the shortage of players for the Harriers was taking its toll and Bank Quay with the advantage of their extra man ran in more points. Then, with the light fading fast over Marsh Playing Fields, the Harriers scored the try of the match.
A clean break from Paul Sanderson sent Chris Dootson close and his fine pass found the supporting Danny Galvin who dived under the posts to score a memorable try. Dootson converted.
With only seven games left this season, the Harriers can now build on this performance to progress up the league table.
To ensure future success a bigger squad of players is required, so anyone wishing to play regular first team rugby in a competitive Division Two of the North West Counties please contact coach Tony Standish or Norman Wilcock on 01942 676846.
