West Hull 20 Leigh East 18: LEIGH East must still be wondering how on earth they ever managed to lose this Arriva Trains Conference Premier fixture against West Hull.

With a 12-2 half time advantage after dominating the first 40 minutes, East should have been on target for one of the big shocks of the day against a side which, while not as strong as they were, are still arguably one of the best.

But instead of building on their first half superiority, a second half collapse created by silly mistakes and poor discipline saw East shoot themselves in the foot yet again as another game which should have been won was simply thrown away.

Some decisions went against East - most crucial of all West Hull's final try which was seriously disputed as a double movement - but in the final analysis the Leigh side can only really blame themselves for turning what should have been an outstanding victory into another disappointing defeat.

It took East just 14 minutes to get 12 points on the board. The game was just nine minutes old when full back Kay fielded a kick and Lewis, who was again a key player, made the break to take play to the half way line where Danny Kilshaw, who had a quality game at scrum half, took the ball from acting half and shimmied his way past four defenders for a superb try.

Woods converted and five minutes later was called on to add the goal points to his own sparkling try from just inside his own half. Wests only reply had been a penalty goal from Wayne Harris sandwiched between Easts two tries.

Shaun Whiteside had given a massive opening 20 minutes with his powerful running and no-nonsense tackling and East seemed to lose a little of their momentum when the big prop left the field. Despite the efforts of players like Starkie, Fletcher and Taylor it was errors in both attack and defence - lost possession and missed tackles - which saw the host side level the scores within 15 minutes of the re-start. Wests then took the lead with a penalty goal before going further ahead six minutes from time with a questionable touchdown.

When East final got to grips with the game in the second half it was too late and they had to be content with an injury time try and conversion from Woods who won the chase for Gunning's kick through.
