Golborne Parkside 'A' 24 Langworthy Reds 18: GOLBORNE Parkside's NWCARL Cup last 16 game at Chorley Panthers was cancelled due to a waterlogged pitch for the second time.
However the second team's fixture in the same competition at Langworth Reds, who play in a division above them, went ahead.
The 'A' team who provided the shock of the last round when they knocked out Eccleston UGB did it again, storming to a convincing 24-18 victory over their older and bigger opponents and have now reached the last eight of the competition.
The young Golborne side took a shock lead after only three minutes when 19-year-old Craig Timmins picked up a loose ball to race 50 meters to score a unconverted try.
Golborne continued to hold their own and doubled their lead to 8-0 when hooker Neil Muir scored the second try. Kurt Wallace was next to score an unconverted try to make the score 12-0 after 30 minutes play and well on course for another cup shock
However, in the last 10 minutes of the first half Golborne had two players sin-binned and during the period they were down to 11 players Langworthy took advantage to score three converted tries and a 18-12 half time lead.
Three minutes into the second half Golborne reduced the lead to 16-18 when Carl Kelly handled twice to score another unconverted try.
Five minutes later young Timmins was at it again as he swooped over for his second try converted by Muir to give Golborne the lead 22-8. Muir added another goal to extend the lead to 24-18 and the Golborne youngsters held on to record another memorial cup victory.
The Golborne open age coaching team, which was extended over the Christmas period and now consists of David Tickle, Dean Cross, Duane Alder and Paul Melling are all happy with the progress the teams are making and invite any youth and open age players new or old to come along to training sessions that take place on Tuesday and Thursday nights at Golborne High School. Widnes St Marries Under 18s (16) V Golborne Parkside Under 18s (12)
Golborne Parkside visited joint league leaders Widnes St Marries on Sunday and just failed to pull of a league double after defeating them earlier in the season. Marries opened the score 6 -0 with a converted try but Stuart Arkwright equalised with a try and goal. In a highly charged end entertaining encounter the score remained locked at 6 all just 16 minutes from the end of the game. Until St Marries regained the lead with two quick tries and a conversion to take a 16 - 6 lead. Golborne hit back with a great wingers try from Danny Smith goaled by Stuart Arkwright and although Golborne were pressing for the winner time ran out on them to end another superb game of top class youth rugby.
Blackbrook Under 14s 46 V Golborne Parkside Under 14s 0
Golborne under 14s faced their toughest test of the season so far when they visited the undefeated leaders of the Premier League Blackbrook who play 3 division higher than Golborne in the NWCYL Cup and although on paper they suffered a large defeat the team which consists of under 13s and under 14s players really gave a splendid account of them self's. Especially in the first half when they defended heroically with Parkinson, Wignall and Hughes outstanding in defence.
It took nearly half off the first half before Blackbrook scored and they managed to contain their much bigger opponents to a 16 - 0 half time lead. In the second half size began to tell as Blackbrook ran in another 30 unanswered points.
