THE SONS of a Fylde woman who claims to be the late Hollywood screen siren -- Jeanne Crain -- are at odds after their mother's true identity was called into question.

Both Canadian-born Peter Hamel and step-brother, Ken Laws, offer differing accounts of the background of former Help the Aged charity shop worker, Marjorie Calvert, 68.

As The Citizen revealed last week, Ms Calvert not only claims to be the daughter of legendary trumpet player, Eddie Calvert, but also the Oscar-winning actress Jeanne Crain.

She disappeared just weeks before the reported death of the 78-year-old actress from a heart attack at her home in Santa Barbara, California, on December 14.

Peter, who declined to give his true age, said: "There is absolutely no mystery surrounding my mother's true identity.

"She is the real Jeanne Crain and we can't understand why people don't just accept that.

"So what if she prefers to shun the Hollywood scene and lead a normal life with her new husband on the Fylde.

"At the end of the day we are just normal people trying to get on with it without too much fuss."

According to Peter, a Blackpool Pleasure Beach ride attendant, his mother was presented with reports of her death after returning from a winter cruise with husband, William Laws, 89, whom she married in October 2001.

He claims Ms Calvert -- who lives with her husband and son at the Marton Mere Holiday Village, Mythop Road, Blackpool -- is now considering legal action against those who announced her supposed death.

But her US-based stepson Ken Laws, 56, is unconvinced about his new family member's star-studded past.

Ken, who had his own brush with fame as drummer with 70s rock band, Hudson-Ford, now lives with wife, Mary-Ann, in Atlanta, Georgia.

Ken said: "Ever since my dad married Marge I've wholeheartedly believed her not to be Jeanne Crain. Three days before they married I checked into her background and there is no way she can be the real Jeanne Crain or even Eddie Calvert's daughter.

"I urged dad not to go ahead with the marriage but he's extremely stubborn.

"And, after introducing Marge as Jeanne Crain to all his friends, refused to lose face by not marrying her.

"In desperation I turned to a family friend for help.

"He telephoned Marge's mobile to ask her about her identity but she claimed she couldn't talk because she was in Egypt visiting Omar Sharif!

"If it was anybody else's family this entire tale would be funny but Marge is an extremely manipulative woman.

"She's encouraged my elderly dad to sell his Poulton home, live in a caravan and take her on expensive holidays each year.

"Now he's even going around pretending to have been her agent and the man behind her movie deals in the 40s and 50s.

"It's utterly ludicrous.

"To my mind, Marge's identity is a lie that has grown to epic proportions and quite frankly I'm just amazed that they've all been able to get away with it for so long."

Ms Crain, Ms Calvert and Mrs Laws are currently embarking on their second cruise of the winter and are not due back in Britain until the end of the month.
