A volleyball club finally managed to win an elusive national championship after twenty years of trying.
Naaz Volleyball have participated in the Toofan Birmingham tournament year in year out but always stumbled in the latter stages.
All bets were off as they took on reigning champions and hosts Toofan of Birmingham in the final. With the game tied at one set each the final set will go down in Naaz folklore as one of the greatest comebacks ever. Naaz were 16-1 down in that set and needed every bit of their nerve and energy to turn the game on its head.
They went on to win 21-20 and beat a side which had never lost a tournament anywhere in the UK for over eight years. Naaz had earlier lost to Toofan in the group stages of the tournament.
And if that wasn't enough three members of the team also picked up the player of the tournament trophies. Sajid Firfirey (best netty) , Mushtaq Yunus (best server) and Abdulla Solkar (best centre) helped Naaz put the downers on Toofan.
It was a moment to savour as captain, Ismail Kadu lifted the winners trophy to the delight of fellow team members and a passionate and vocal following who had made their way down the M6.
Naaz reached the final after beating Leicester, Birmingham B in the group stages. In the semi-finals it took five tie-breaks to seperate Naaz from the Toofan B side.
