Whilst I agree that we should all have an interest about what it going on in the world, I think we as a community make too much of it.
By doing so I think we have become used to ignoring the welfare of our own neighbourhoods.
It seems a very easy thing to do. Whenever there is anything relating to the Middle East and the sub-continent within hours people can start raising money and organising events. But when it comes to their own communities they shy away and pretend they have more important 'worldly' issues to deal with. I say this because we all live in this country. We work here. We all intend to stay here.
Even this generation seems to be following the one before and ignoring things like drug dealers, crime, racism and education within their own communities. It is as if no-one cares and wants to take responsibility.
I also think much of this is due to major divisions within the community. Those who have money do not wish to really associate themselves with those that do not, unless they are in a far away country for which they will then gain recognition from like-minded individuals.
It is good to be charitable but should we also not think about changing attitudes that still seem to be prevalent in our community - especially the view that helping only those who are the same religion is good and everything else should be brushed under the carpet.
Should we the new generation take the initiative and help break down barriers and make sure youngsters stay out of trouble. If we continue to ignore these important issues I think we will see the problems only escalate further and our children will be the ones to suffer.
I understand many people do work hard for their communities. There are others that do so but for religious reasons. There are people who try their best to work to the best of their ability and try to tackle problems in their neighbourhoods.
This kind of work is necessary and should be highlighted more. In Asian Image I regulary read such exploits, which please me but the people who do this should be commended more by those around them. I say this because I feel ashamed at times how people are willing to put so much time and effort for things affecting worldly issues and then go back to their cosy homes without a care about what is happening on their own doorstep.
I agree we all have a duty to support poorer nations but what about supporting initiatives and volunteering within your own communities.
We can make a change to other countries but our young people need your support.
