FIREFIGHTERS in Burnley have issued a warning about the dangers of decorative candles after fire destroyed a bedroom last night.

The blaze at a home in Brunshaw Avenue started when an unattended candle set fire to curtains on the first-floor.

The occupants of the house were downstairs and escaped the building after they smelled smoke about 7.40pm.

Flames destroyed the bedroom and contents while smoke damage affected the rest of the house and the first floor of a neighbouring property.

Station officer Paul Harvey said: "This couple were very lucky but we keep getting fires like this and people need to be very careful with candles.

"They should be in an approved, fire-proof holder, shouldn't be near any other objects and must never be left unattended. Anyone unsure of what they need should call their local fire station for advice."
