POLICE are urging caution after residents complained of companies cold-calling them at home.

Police said they have received complaints from Rossendale residents concerning security companies who make 'cold-calls' followed up by home visits during which they put pressure on people to buy alarm systems.

PC Sally Atkinson said: "Home security is of paramount importance - people do need to think about things like alarm systems.

"However, people should certainly never feel pressured into buying a system by companies who cold-call or make unsolicited appointments for their salespeople.

"If you do want to review your security then do some research first. Pick up a leaflet on home security from your local police station and shop around before you choose a system.

"And, if you are inviting a salesperson to visit you, then consider asking a relative or friend to be present when they call.

"Finally, if someone does call at your house and you are unsure about them, then please do not let them in."

Anybody who wants information about security measures can pick up a crime prevention leaflet from their local police station.
