FOUR men armed with sledgehammers were being hunted today after they tried to break into three cash machines.

The incident at Primrose Garage, Whalley Road, Clitheroe, then a shop in Roman Road at the junction with Stopes Brow, Blackamoor, Blackburn, and a Tescos in Bury, happened within several hours of each other from 11.30pm yesterday.

Each time, a silver Volkswagen and a black Audi turned up at the premises.

Police said four men burst out of the cars and used sledgehammers in an attempt to break in.

But they fled before forcing open the machines after being spotted by passers-by.

Insp Graham Keates, of Blackburn police, said: "The only common denominator between the premises is the cash machine.

"They must have a list of where the cash machines are as it seems strange to go from Clitheroe to Blackamoor."

Anyone with information should call Blackburn police on 01254 51212.
