FAMILIES in one of the most deprived areas of Burnley are being given a welcome helping hand by a centre offering a range of support.
As the area waits for news about the success of the Elevate scheme which could help transform the town, NICK EVANS spoke to staff at the Elm Tree Family Support Centre in Accrington Road. . .
BEING given the best start in life is important - especially if you happen to be born in one of Burnley's most deprived areas.
And staff at the Elm Tree Support Centre are determined to ensure that south west Burnley's next generation are given every advantage possible.
Its baby massage course is just one of many initiatives aimed at improving the quality of life for its residents - both for youngsters and their parents.
The class, open to mums and dads with young babies, helps provide a chance for parents to meet up and socialise as well as offering a way to learn how to perfect relaxation techniques for young ones.
Funded by SRB6 regeneration money, the courses are supported by the National Children's Home charity (NCH).
And as the children grow older, the centre - which was set up in 1998 to provide a wide range of help for families with young children - continues to provide an oasis of local support.
They currently run a full programme of activities including pre-school music, young mums group, parent and toddlers groups, computer training, various women's groups, mums and baby group and dads' group, plus individual advice, information and support.
Project manager Sylvia Godfrey said: "It is very important we can offer services like these in south west Burnley - an area which has a large number of disadvantaged families.
"All services are free of charge and there is also a creche provided for those with pre-school children.
" A busy counselling service is available for people who need to speak to someone, in confidence, about personal problems.
"The pioneering work we have undertaken over the last five years is now being mainstreamed through the Surestart programme.
"This year will see the amalgamation of Elm Tree Family Support Service with the Surestart programme for south west Burnley which will mean that the work with young families and children can continue to flourish.
"The funding will mean we will be able to offer more services and do more of the same valuable work we do now.
"Elm Tree operates an open door, friendly policy and welcomes everyone."
Surestart is a multi-million pound government scheme which aims to make sure children in deprived areas have the best possible start in life.
Trinity ward councillor Carole Galbraith said: "The Elm Tree Family Support Service has been doing excellent work throughout the south west Burnley area.
"It has made a big difference to the quality of life for young families for the last five years."
There are currently a few vacancies for baby massage, computer training, mums-to-be, dads' group, men's health group and counselling.
If people are interested just come along to Elm Tree Family Support Service, 126 Accrington Road, next to Taywood Nursery, or telephone on 01282 452405.
