A CAR involved in a fatal hit-and-run may have been a taxi or pizza delivery car, police revealed today.
Shaun Metcalfe, 34, was returning home from a night out at the Hare and Hounds pub, Oswaldtwistle, when he was killed as he crossed Blackburn Road last Saturday night.
His death has devastated the local community.
Today Detective Superintendent Mick Gradwell said a witness who saw the vehicle which hit Mr Metcalfe at 3am on Sunday had seen a white sign, or sticker, near the driver's door.
He said: "They saw a white sign by the driver's door, similar to a taxi sign or that of a takeaway vehicle.
"Obviously we would urge the driver of the car, which witnesses say is red, to come forward as this would help Mr Metcalfe's family.
"But we would also urge members of the public to be aware of damage to the skirting under the bumper of neighbours' or colleagues' cars.
"The damage from this impact would not be obvious, but there would be signs underneath the car."
Det Supt Gradwell said police were also awaiting the results of forensic evidence from Mr Metcalfe's clothing.
This, he said, would take around two weeks, but could reveal the make and model of the vehicle involved.
Officers are also working to enhance images taken from CCTV cameras in the area.
Mr Metcalfe was struck opposite the Hare and Hounds pub where he worked every Saturday from 4pm until 8pm. His friend Mick Ashby, 35, was crossing the road with him, but had reached the other side when Mr Metcalfe was struck by a car travelling from Blackburn towards Accrington.
Police said the car stopped 40 yards further up the road and was put into reverse, but was then driven off.
Mr Metcalfe worked as a wood-sprayer at Baron Mercers, in William Street, Accrington.
He lived with his brother Mark, 35, and mother Jennifer, 51, in Ruskin Avenue, Oswaldtwistle.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Blackburn Police on 01254 51212, or phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
