NO one can object to new ideas which will slow down speeding motorists and make our roads safer.

Also as we have said before speed cameras have their place - and that is at real accident blackspots.

It is not hidden just over the brows of hills in their dozens throughout the area where they appear to have been positioned deliberately to maximise revenue by entrapping drivers who wander slightly over the limit rather than with safety most in mind.

Today we see the unveiling of another instrument intended to slow traffic down which is to be known as SID or Speed Indicator Device.

SID is an electronic sign which smiles at motorists who are keeping within the speed limit and frowns at those who are not.

It is favoured by the Association of British Drivers who point out that it embarrasses drivers rather than penalising them.

That is one view but other motorists have slammed it as a pathetic gimmick.

It is also surely a distraction which will take a driver's attention off the road ahead and plenty of safety advertisements have pointed out what happens when concentration is momentarily lost.

The time and money that will go on moving the various SIDs around could surely be better spent, for example, on catching some of the boy racers who tear around our roads and are a serious risk to life and limb.
