EAST Lancashire is preparing for a big freeze that could see temperatures plummet to minus-9C.

A cold weather system heading to the UK is set to bring freezing cold air from the Arctic to Lancashire.

Now support groups and local authorities are issuing advice to keep its residents safe from harm in what could be one of the coldest winters in memory.

Airports, trains and roads could all be affected in the bad weather and travellers have been warned to expect disruptions.

A spokesman for the Met Office said: "There is a cold snap on its way. The worst days look set to be Tuesday and Wednesday but the weekend will see a transition to the colder weather.

"Daytime temperatures will be struggling to reach zero and night time could be of the order of minus-seven, eight or nine in the rural areas.

"But wind chill will make it seem much colder than that. We are urging people to check out travel reports, take extra clothes and have cars ready for the cold weather."

According to weather experts, the cold spell will start on Sunday in Scotland, spreading south. By Tuesday there is a risk of snow across the country, with temperatures dropping even lower on Wednesday.

A spokesman for Lancashire County Council said: "We have been keeping an eye on the severe weather warnings and we have reminded schools of the emergency closure procedure, which is to alert radio stations, and to contact the council.

"If it is snowing before children are due to set off for schools the best bet is to listen to the radio."
