LEIGH ATHLETIC...2

PRESTWICH HEYS...5

HEYS regained top spot in what was a real six-pointer of a game.

They destroyed their hosts with a passionate brand of football not seen for a long time and which surely augurs well for the future of the club on the pitch.

Heys went into the game on the back of a draw against East Manchester, while the previous week Leigh had thrashed reigning champions Wythenshawe Amateurs 7-1 and began looking as though they intended to carry on where they had left off.

During the opening quarter Heys' defence had to be at its best and goalkeeper Damien Rooney got a hand to a fierce drive and deflecting it onto the underside of the bar and eventually to safety.

Having weathered Leigh's opening storm Heys then took the lead on 25 minutes, when Derek Watson headed home a perfect Phil Woodcock cross.

Five minutes later Abid Uddin made it 2-0, forcing the ball home from close range.

Leigh were then given a boost just before the break when they were awarded a debatable penalty, converted by the league's leading scorer, Chris Simm.

But with Lyons and Kavanagh bossing midfield Heys emerged for the second half in confident mood and produced a performance that surpassed even their own high standards.

Watson scored a superb second to make it 3-1 before man-of-the-match Uddin hit his second and Heys' fourth to put the game beyond Leigh.

With the game secure and Walters, McGee, Dydyna and Cunningham solid at the back, manager Adie Moran used his subs wisely.

Sixteen-year-old youth teamer Tom Coleman replaced another in McGee; Steve Orrell took over from Watson and Shaw from Woodcock.

The fifth goal was not long in coming and it was scored by John Garrick, who beat three defenders before coolly slotting home.

Leigh did grab a second in the final minute, courtesy of Brendan Smith, but the final scoreline provided ample evidence of Heys' total domination.

TEAM: Rooney, Dydyna, Cunningham, Walters, McGee, Woodcock, Kavanagh, Lyons, Garrick, Uddin, Watson. Subs: Orrell, Shaw, Coleman.

Tomorrow Heys continue their defence of the Gilgryst Cup with a quarter final tie away at Stockport Georgians, kick-off 1.30pm.
