BRENT Peters praised his players as they produced a shock quarter-final result in the League Challenge Cup on Saturday.

Bacup Borough came away from North West Counties Division One high-flyers Clitheroe with a 1-0 win thanks to a goal by Lee Anderson.

Peters said: "This was a big result for us and I am well pleased with the lads, and pleased for them that they are in the semi-final.

"Over the 90 minutes we were worthy winners. We did have to defend stoutly at the end, but Clitheroe were at home playing in the cup so they had to gamble. But whatever they gambled with we were equal to it."

The visitors started brightly and after just seven minutes Russell Clarke had to make a last ditch tackle to deny Darren Emmett a shooting opportunity.

Clitheroe's first chance didn't arrive until the 22nd minute when Chris Whittingham headed over from a Barrie Hart cross.

Rhodri Giggs had a great chance for Bacup on 43 minutes when he found himself clean through on goal but Kris Richens forced him wide and was able to save his shot.

But Bacup took the lead from the resulting corner. Nicky Taylor's shot from the edge of the area was going well wide until Lee Anderson stuck out a leg and deflected the ball into the net.

The second half was all Clitheroe but they met an inspired man in the form of Bacup goalkeeper David Felgate, who produced three great saves to keep them out.

On 53 minutes a great cross was met by Lee Cryer. His header was destined for the bottom corner but Felgate managed to palm it away for a corner.

The ex-Bolton Wanderers stopper was in action just minutes later when he saved well from Whittingham when the Clitheroe winger was well placed. His hat-trick of super saves then saw him push away a wickedly deflected Hart free kick.

The Blues threw on all three substitutes in an attempt to find a way back and two of these, Neil Spencer and Glenn Ainsworth, both came close late on but Bacup held out for the victory and a semi-final against either Woodley Sports or Warrington Town.
