Blackburn were looking to keep their winning momentum going following last week's hard earned victory at the hands of Leigh in the Cup while Caldy were looking to end a run of two straight league defeats.
Blackburn started extremely brightly early on, pushing Caldy back straight from the kick-off. On 2 minutes a strong maul gave hooker Gareth Dyer the chance to keep up his rich vein of scoring form as he touched down after an impressive collective effort from the Burn pack. Caldy seemed rattled by Burn's early blitz and another three points was added from the boot of winger Gareth Evans via a penalty. Blackburn were halted for a considerable amounts of the first half as they seemed to lose their momentum, although Caldy still had yet to make an impression in the Burn 22. On the half hour mark, another Blackburn maul resulted in the second and final try of the game, this time captain Adam Smith the man going over.
Blackburn were forced into a change at half time due to a shoulder injury to Gareth Evans and had to re-shuffle to accommodate Jonny Hayhurst. Caldy made use of the extra man in the opening stages of the second period, as the ever-willing Andrew Graham was sin-binned for a punch just before the break, with centre Mark Pennington knocking over a penalty for three points. Blackburn managed to do what Caldy failed to in the first half and that was to contain their opponents as there was a sizeable wind blowing in one direction. Burn put together some impressive pieces of play and fly half Matt Spence proved to be a real asset with some accurate kicking when the pressure was on. Caldy failed to make the elements work in their advantage and could only muster up another penalty from Pennington before the end.
This win now puts Burn two points clear of Caldy in second place but two behind Altrincham who occupy the top spot after their win away to Oldham.
BLACKBURN 13
CALDY 6
