TEENAGERS have just a few days left to apply for places on a "police academy" being set up for youngsters in Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale.
The Volunteer Police Cadet Scheme, launched earlier this month, is being piloted by Pennine Police on behalf of the Lancashire Constabulary. It is one of only three in the entire country which lead to a B-TEC accreditation for cadets.
Cadets, who must be aged 16 to 19, get to learn more about police departments, the criminal justice system, legislation and the work of all local emergency services.
They also get the chance to take part in an outdoor pursuit weekend and a crime prevention project.
Application forms must be completed and returned to Pennine Police by January 30. Successful applicants will then be invited to take part in interviews and assessments, and 28 cadets will be chosen.
Training begins on March 23 and will last 38 weeks.
Meetings will be held every Tuesday from 7pm to 9pm at a venue in the Burnley area.
Volunteer cadet co-ordinator PC Mike Aspden said: "We're delighted at the response we've had so far. We're had a good deal of interest in the scheme and more than 150 application forms have already been sent out to local youngsters.
"However, it's not too late if there is anybody else who would like to join the cadets."
