A HOT tub and an outdoor pool will soon give the dilapidated Midland Hotel a touch of class.
Plans for regeneration of the world-famous hotel were given the green light by Lancaster City councillors this week.
But some residents are holding their breath until details of Urban Splash's blueprint for the restoration of the art deco landmark are known.
At Monday's meeting, councillors voted unanimously for the project to get underway - but also expressed concern about 'the bigger picture'.
Cllr David Kerr said: "It will look absolutely fabulous and I love the proposal but there is no reference to the Morecambe Action Plan and the overall project, which concerns me because we need to think about the whole area."
The Twentieth Century Society told the council that it applauds the plans, saying the hotel has a promising future.
But Lancaster Civic Society, although behind restoration, is concerned that its use as a hotel is not viable.
Urban Splash acquired the building in December 2002 and since then they have worked extensively on plans in a bid to preserve the important heritage elements of the building.
Urban Splash chairman Tom Bloxham says: "I am thrilled that our proposals have received planning consent, it is a very important stage in the process of this difficult project. However, much still needs to done before we can go on site."
The award-winning firm intends to restore the Midland as a hotel, retaining many of its original features. It also has plans to create a sun terrace and rooftop residents lounge.
