POLICE are appealing for help to trace two bogus workmen who tried to con their way into a quick-witted Tyldesley pensioner's home.
The 70-year-old woman was at her Georgian Court home at 1.40pm on Monday when a man called claiming to be a water worker.
He told her to open her door and when she asked for ID he went to get his accomplice who then threatened the woman that they would come back with a court order if she didn't let them in.
The woman refused and called the police.
The first man is described as white and aged about 25, 5' 6" tall and of heavy build with a round face and dark hair. He was wearing a dark jacket, grey baseball cap and leather gloves.
The second man is described as white, also aged around 25 and 6 ft tall of slim build. He had a thin pale face and hollow cheeks and was wearing a navy jacket.
She later said: "I always leave the door locked and if I'm not expecting anyone I will not let them in. If they are genuine they will be happy to call back."
Detective Inspector Chris Wood said: "This lady did exactly the right thing. I cannot stress how important it is for people to stick to their guns if anyone turns up at their house without ID."
