ONE has to ask if Euro MP Chris Davies has taken leave of his senses. His suggestion that we all grow a cannabis plant in our front room is at best slightly odd and at worst incitement to use what is still an illegal and harmful substance.
Mr Davies, who has a criminal conviction for possession of cannabis after leading a political protest against existing drugs policy in 2002, wants people to be able to grow a single pot plant without fear of prosecution.
Cannabis was this week downgraded from a Category B to a Category C drug.
The only time that arrests will now be made in Lancashire is if the person is under 18, possessing it near schools, youth clubs and play areas or smoking it in public.
Mr Davies says he wants to deal a blow to the criminal trade in drugs by giving those who use cannabis recreationally the chance to avoid contact with those in dealing in more harmful substances.
The Government has clouded the issue by refusing to take a hard line on the drug.
But that should not give people like Mr Davies the perceived right to muddle the issue even further by trying to create their own solutions to what is a very complex and serious issue.
His idea is, quite simply, potty!
