AS a European truck driver working for a Belgium company, I have followed the debate on the siting and function of the speed cameras. Most people are correct in thinking that they are nothing more than entrapment.
However, I am amazed that people get caught out and even more surprised when they complain. In Belgium I think I have seen maybe four or five gatso type cameras, the speed limit in built-up areas is 50 km and I would say that 95 per cent of road users keep to this limit, even though no cameras are present.
One must ask 'why?' The answer may be the penalties, or maybe they respect the fact that people live in these areas and children are unpredictable, or maybe they know that the police are often there not only checking speed but things like MoTs, insurance etc. Speeding is not just a UK thing it is worldwide.
We must look at the way other countries are dealing with the problem, and follow or lead the way that is best. At the end of the day the power is with the people.
Next time you come to a 30mph zone try it, you never know, you may just like it.
