CHILDREN at primary schools across Darwen have spent months preparing for an annual bulb and flower show.
They have nurtured various bulbs, including narcissus and daffodils, at their schools in the hope of growing the best bloom for the Annual Schools' Bulb Competition and Exhibition. The event, organised by Darwen Civic Centre, is on February 7 at the St John Ambulance hall in George Street. Mayor of Blackburn Coun Mike Barrett will be invited to view the colourful display and present winners with their prizes. Jack Fisher, from Darwen Civic Centre, said: "We contact the school to offer them bulb packs. Schools then place their orders with us and they are delivered straight to the schools in about November.
"The children take the bulbs home and look after them over the winter. They then bring them in, in full bloom, hoping to win a prize. We try to give as many prizes as we can with cups for the overall winners.
"The idea is to encourage as many youngsters as possible to look after the environment."
