LANCASHIRE families are turning their backs on giving traditional presents for birthdays, weddings and retirements and instead ask for donations to be made to their favourite charities.
Fundraising manager for Barnardo's, Luen Thompson, said: "We are seeing a definite trend towards people wanting to mark significant events in their lives by giving something back to society.
"For example, many couples getting married have already set up home and have everything they need.
"They are asking family and friends to make donations to charity instead of buying gifts they don't need."
A rising number of bereaved families planning funerals for their loved ones are also approaching funeral directors for information about charities and how donations can be made.
Mr Thompson added: "In these sad circumstances, Barnardo's gives people the chance to make a celebration of life.
"People want to know that their contributions can make a difference to the life chances of local children and young people.
"In the past six months alone, people have donated more than £4,000 in this way."
