WHEN is an Englishman's home not his castle? According to the law a person may use such force as is reasonable in the prevention of crime. But how to assess reasonable?

This is the opening situation in Peter Whalley's Dead of Night, presented by the Rossendale Players, as Jack Lilley is acquitted of the manslaughter of a burglar who broke into his house late one night.

Jack pleaded that during the struggle the burglar was shot with his own gun. The victim's family are not convinced and wait to pass their own sentence on Jack, who is celebrating with his girlfriend and their neighbours.

As the night progresses the truth is revealed with devastating effect on Jack and his guests, leading to a highly-charged climax.

This topical thriller will run until Saturday in the New Millennium Theatre at 7.30pm.

Tickets cost £5 (concessions £4 - no concessions Saturday). Call (01706) 228720.
