WORK on a new £1.25million school building for primary school pupils in Burnley is due to be completed in the summer.

Pupils and staff at Springfield Community Primary School are looking forward to moving into their new school at the start of the autumn term.

About 220 pupils will be moving into the former Burnley Wood school site, which has been undergoing a major revamp and extension.

The project faced delays following an extension of the scheme to replace the outside of the existing building, improvements to fire and intruder alarms and security fencing.

Lancashire County Council agreed to provide extra investment allowing the project to continue without the need for cuts.

Parents are being urged to go to the current Springfield School, which is at the Todmorden Road site, to check out the plans for the new school building.

Headteacher Anne Wells said: "I do appreciate that the move represents a big change for many families, but it will only be a change in the bricks and mortar.

"We have a lot of organising to do before the summer, but I know all the hard work will be worth it. The launch of the new school will be one of the first regeneration steps in that area and we are proud to be part of such exciting change in this part of the town."

Lancashire County Council's Cabinet Member for Education, County Councillor Alan Whittaker, said: "I am looking forward to visiting the pupils when they move into their new school.

"The whole school community has been very patient in waiting to move to their refurbished building, but I am confident that their patience will be rewarded when they enjoy classes in a new building."
