A SINGLE mum was found to be more than twice the drink-drive limit after she got out of a car in the early hours.

Burnley magistrates heard how Amanda Floyd, 36, told police "I know I have been stupid" after she was arrested.

Floyd, of Avondale Road, Nelson, admitted being in charge of a vehicle with excess alcohol. She was told to pay £170 in costs and fines and was banned for four months.

Eliott Taylforth, prosecuting, told the court three police officers on the roadside in Nelson heard a loud grinding noise about 40 to 50 metres away. They then saw a car stopped in the entrance to Pendle Valley Mill. The break lights were illuminated.

The defendant got out of the vehicle, tried to lock the door and a male got out of the passenger side. Officers approached Floyd, spoke to her and decided she was under the influence of drink.

Mr Taylforth said Floyd was asked to provide a specimen. It proved positive and she was arrested and taken to the police station.

She said she knew she had been stupid. The defendant gave two specimens of breath, the first showing 85 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - the legal limit is 35. Floyd had no previous convictions.

Rachel Adamson, defending, said Floyd was mortified to find herself in court. She had never been in such a position before but now had a criminal record.

She had found custody a terrifying and frightening ordeal and was not released for more than 12 hours. The custody office was very busy and police were short staffed and didn't have anybody to interview her.
