A MOTHER remained in a critical condition in hospital on Wednesday after she was seriously injured in a road accident on her 28th birthday.

Michelle Williams has undergone more than 10 hours of emergency surgery as doctors battle to save her life.

Parents Garry and Beatrice Williams have kept a bedside vigil since their daughter was involved in a collision with a car in Water Street, Radcliffe, on Saturday evening.

Michelle was taken to Fairfield Hospital before being transferred to Salford's Hope Hospital where she remains unconscious in the intensive care unit

Traffic police are currently reviewing CCTV footage of Water Street in the hope that it shows how the accident happened.

Michelle, a former Radcliffe High pupil, who was 28 on Saturday, had been making her way from her home in Knowles Street to her parents' house in nearby Ulundi Street, Radcliffe.

At 6.35pm, she crossed Water Street but was in collision with a Ford Orion driven by a 23-year-old local man.

Mr Williams said: "It is too early to point the finger of blame at anyone. Her injuries are from top to toe. She has head injuries, pelvic injuries and two broken legs. She is being kept under sedation.

"It is a nightmare. Michelle is our only child and she is a beautiful young woman who dotes on her two children, Chloe and Leon."

Her children were being cared for by Michelle's grandmother when the accident happened. Chloe, aged nine, has been told about the accident.

Mr Williams added: "Leon is only two, nearly three, so he wouldn't understand what happened. He is missing his mum."

While police review the CCTV footage, they are keen for more witnesses to come forward to help their investigation.

Inspector Andy Hudson, head of Bury's traffic unit, said: "Michelle is very poorly and in a critical condition and our thoughts are with her family at this traumatic time.

"I would urge anyone who was in Water Street on Saturday evening and witnessed the accident to contact the traffic unit urgently on 0161 856 8075."

The driver of the Ford Orion, who is understood to have provided a negative breath-test, and his 15-year-old male passenger, were uninjured.

The accident caused major tailbacks around Radcliffe town centre and diversions were in place until 10pm.
