TWELVE-MAN Leigh East U13s put on a great show of skill and commitment to beat previously unbeaten league champions Haydock Warriors 12-10 on their own patch.
East dominated the first half with Haydock not looking likely to score. Stand-off Philip Sproston opened the scoring, crashing over from close range with Martin Grainey converting.
Through sustained pressure East found themselves camped on the Haydock try line and this led to Adam Thomasson breaking three tackles to go over close to the sticks with Brett Hardman converting for a 12-0 half time lead.
At the break Haydock brought on plenty of fresh legs from their 20-man squad. This looked as if it might prove vital with Haydock piling on the pressure and led to an overlap being created and Haydock scored in the corner.
The East defence held firm and it was only through a kick over that Haydock pulled it back to 12-10. For the remainder of the game East found themselves camped on their own line but held strong until the final whistle.
