A VOLUNTEER driving scheme is appealing for more motorists to help provide transport for the elderly and disabled.
Burnley, Pendle and Bacup Communicar currently has 18 drivers, who use their own cars to drive elderly and disabled people, who cannot use public transport, to various places, including the shops, the doctors and the hospital.
The scheme, which is backed by Lancashire County Council, the Council for Voluntary Service, the Countryside Agency and the NHS, pays volunteer drivers 42p per mile to drive people around.
County councillor Jean Yates said: "This service is a lifeline for people in need. It helps them live their lives to the full.
"The volunteers needed must be patient and kind as they give their time and use of their cars."
Volunteers must have a full driving licence, their own car and a helpful nature.
They do not have commit themselves to being available on fixed days through the year and do not have to drive more than 20 miles beyond the area's boundaries.
Anyone interested in volunteering, and anyone wanting to use the service, should contact Jeanette Holden on 01282 415163 between noon and 3pm, Monday to Friday.
