I AM amazed at the hypocrisy being shown by the authorities over the unfortunate deaths of the Chinese cockle pickers.
Their activities have been going on for the last year and have been the subject of countless media items and spoken about in councils.
It was obvious an accident was imminent -- the loss of a Sherpa van on the beach at Newbiggin near Ulverston was a warning. It was also obvious that the cocklers were being herded around and forced to work in the most horrendous conditions.
All the authorities, councils and the government have been fully aware of events but have done nothing to prevent it. It has taken human sacrifice to make them aware of their responsibilities not only to their country but to slaves imported to make rich men richer.
