LEIGH MINERS Rangers U11s won bragging rights in their derby clash with Leigh East but had to work hard for the win as the match was more evenly contested than the 18-4 scoreline suggests.
Slater opened the scoring with an unconverted try to give the Rangers a 4-0 half-time lead but East came back at them in the second half to level the scores and it looked at one stage as though playing into the biting wind was going to affect the Rangers spirits.
However, two good individual tries from Ashton and Ratcliffe were followed by Slater's second try to seal the win.
The two second rowers Slater and Ratcliffe caused problems for East all through the match while Eccleston's performance at dummy half was much improved. Although he didn't get on the scoresheet the MOM award went to Mikalauskas who set an excellent example both in attack and defence.
