ICE-COOL nerves from Stuart Fisher brought Leigh RU first XV a 19-16 win at Old Anselmians.
Fisher kept his head, and his accuracy, to land a touchline penalty in the last minute to snatch victory.
The home team missed an early penalty chance but converted a second shortly afterwards when Leigh offered too much advice to the referee.
Leigh attacked from the re-start and missed a penalty chance of their own before Fisher levelled the scores.
A defensive error almost let Anselmians in for a try but sharp defence by Harrison saved the day. Leigh conceded a second penalty however, but the earlier pattern was repeated when the forwards drove up field to be awarded a second penalty of their own and Fisher levelled the scores at half time.
With the wind at their backs in the second half Leigh were expecting to dominate, but poor distribution of ample possession continually let them down and they failed to make use of the elements.
They took the lead however when a series of short forward drives set up a position for Sutton to crash through the cover to touchdown. Fisher converted for a 13-6 lead but this was short-lived when a defensive lapse at a scrum allowed the home side to steal the ball and drive over. The successful conversion levelled the scores again.
A Wilcock-Bridge combination saw the Leigh winger just short of the line and a resulting penalty by Fisher put Leigh into the lead yet again, only for this to be cancelled out by a similar reply at the other end of the pitch.
In the final minute of the game, another strong run by Bridge produced a further penalty wide out on the touchline which Fisher converted well under great pressure.
Hooker Wood was Man of the Match with an outstanding display in attack and defence, well supported by No 8 Sutton and debutants Lester and Kearns, while Fisher was the pick of the backs for his match-winning goal kicking.

Porteous and Yates both had a poor day with the boot and all four tries went unconverted, two from under the posts. Hilton enjoyed his start at stand-off. Man of the Match honours were shared between the Grimshaws, father and son, for their tireless work in the Tofts pack, alongside the returning Lawrinson who had an outstanding game.
