RE Peter Britcliffe's letter, February 6, "Memorial will be updated." In this letter he states that various bodies will have to be contacted. Royal British Legion, Ministry of Defence, etc.
Well I have news for him. Neither the Royal British Legion nor the Ministry of Defence will be able to help him. Even the Commonwealth War Graves Commission doesn't have the name of every man who died as a result of World War One.
He can even try the unofficial Pals Web site. There he may find some of the names.
There are only two people who have the correct name, rank and serial number of those missing from the War Memorials, they are William Turner and myself. If he wants the names, he will have to ask for them and publicly acknowledge the hard work done by others, as and when the stone mason is ready with his chisel and not before.
The present total number of names missing stands at:
Accrington -- 48 plus 13 men born in Accrington but lived elsewhere.
Church -- Four plus one man born in Church but lived elsewhere.
Clayton -- Four.
Great Harwood -- 11 plus one man born in Great Harwood but lived elsewhere.
Huncoat -- Two.
Rishton -- Six.
Oswaldtwistle -- 31 plus one man born in Oswaldtwistle but lived elsewhere.
Total -- 106 plus 16.
