PET lovers in Bury are campaigning over right for animals involved in a road accident.
Residents of Elm Street have laid flowers in Rochdale Road at the site where a cat was hit by a car last week. The driver failed to stop and other motorists drove over the cat's remains. Residents later stopped traffic for 30 minutes while they rescued the remains.
Mrs Pamela Pearson, from Elm Street, said: "It was diabolical. The cat, Chloe, was knocked down in Rochdale Road and then run into the ground by other drivers. The animal was unrecognisable. We only knew it was her because her collar was alongside her."
The group now hopes to raise awareness of the problem and are campaigning to get the same rights for other pets as there are for dogs.
The law at the moment states that any dog injured or killed on the road must be reported. But no such law exists for other domestic pets.
Mrs Pearson added: "We have laid flowers to make motorists aware of what we are doing. If a driver hits a cat or any animal they should stop and take it to the vets or take it at least to the side of the road.
"I thought at least one of the drivers that ran over Chloe might have stopped, but they all kept going, like it was nothing."
