THE country was in the grip of a sugar shortage and the manageress of a Blackburn store hit out at abusive customers who were insulting shop staff because they could not buy sugar.
She said: "The old age pensioners are the worst. They blame us and it is not our fault. We have had insults for the past three weeks and it is very upsetting."
A power failure also plunged parts of East Lancashire into chaos, with supplies to 500,000 homes being cut.
