IA WITNESS has told how she believed teenager driver Richard Bradley "did not want to stop" and had "just mowed down" mum-of-three Elaine Haworth.

Shelly McDonnell, was speaking on the fourth day of the trial of 18 year-old Richard Lee Bradley.

Mrs Haworth sustained head and pelvic injuries after she was struck by a car being driven by Bradley, close to her home in Priory Grange, Darwen, on August 15 last year.

Bradley has pleaded guilty to dangerous driving and inflicting grievous bodily harm but faces trial on grievous bodily harm with intent.

Mrs McDonnell told Preston Crown Court that she had been sitting with Elaine and her husband, Danny, when the car had driven past.

She said she had heard someone say: "That's enough. I have had enough" and then Elaine and Danny had got up and headed in the direction of the car.

She said the car had disappeared from her sight into a neighbouring street but when it reappeared it had been moving "very fast", the tyres had been screeching and she could smell burning rubber.

She said she saw Elaine step out from behind a van and put her hands out in front of her.

She told the court: "The car carried on. To me he did not want to stop. He saw Elaine and he just mowed her down."

When asked by prosecuting barrister Richard Howarth why she thought he hadn't wanted to stop, she added: "I think if he did want to stop he would have braked. He must have seen her."

She said that she had not got the impression that he braked or swerved before the collision.

The court also heard from Derek McDonnell, who at the time of the incident had been playing football in the the street with a group of children.

He said he had seen the car go past and had heard the screeching of tyres and then saw Elaine and Danny walk past.

He said: "I shouted to Danny to ask him what was going on and he said Elaine is going to sort it out."

He added that minutes later Danny had crossed over the road and Elaine was in the middle of the road as the car came screeching back.

He said: "As he came out Elaine was stood there with her arms up saying 'Stop, stop'.

"The car hit Elaine and set her flying."
