COLNE took one step towards their first cup final of the season with a 2-1 first leg win in their NWCL Division Two Trophy semi-final.

The FA Vase quarter-finalists had to come back from a goal behind on Saturday against Cheadle Town, who went ahead on 11 minutes when Danny Potts brought down Joe Conner and Lee Wakefield converted from the penalty spot.

Colne made little headway in the first half with only Carl Haworth looking likely to break back for the home side.

The second half saw the Reds step up a gear and they were rewarded on 58 minutes when a Chris Ingham shot was blocked inside the box and Sam Hayes picked up the rebound to score the equaliser.

The pressure increased on the visitors as Colne pushed forward in search of a winner and the breakthrough came 11 minutes from time when a Jason Heffernan free kick was turned in by Gary Rishton to register his second goal of the week.

The Reds survived late pressure from Cheadle and take a one goal lead into the second leg.

Colne now have a week to prepare for the sixth round of the FA Vase against Eastwood Town next Saturday at Holt House (3pm).

Manager Nigel Coates and chairman James Webster are again calling on the town to turn out for the tie which gives Colne a great chance of reaching the two-legged semi-final.
