SCORES of civil servants in Bury walked out yesterday (Mon Feb 16) at the start of a 48-hour strike over low pay.
They joined their colleagues nationwide by taking part in the industrial action involving members of the Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union.
At 7am, striking staff mounted a picket outside Bury's Benefits Office in Angouleme Way and at the Jobcentre in Silver Street, causing disruption at both offices.
PCS representatives said all but 50 of the 250-strong Benefits Office staff went on strike yesterday with more than 40 Jobcentre workers joining the industrial action.
Driving examiners throughout the UK are scheduled to walk out today, (Tues) forcing the cancellation of many driving tests.
The union is demanding an end to what it labels "poverty pay," a fair progression system and an above inflation pay awards for all staff.
