Police Constable George Watson prevented a disaster at Bank Top Mill Co. Ltd, Dixon Street, Blackburn.
After hearing a sprinkler bell valve ringing he forced open the boiler room door to find the boiler on fire. He alerted the fire brigade who put out the fire by removing coal from the hopper.
Traffic had to be diverted after a section of Park Lee Road, Blackburn, caved in shortly after a bus had passed.
