JUST how predictable was the adoption of Kitty Ussher as the prospective Labour candidate for Burnley?
Firstly, we had an all-women shortlist. Just imagine an all-men, all-Catholic, Muslim short list. Heads would have rolled.
Then she buys a house in Burnley. Well it will be a good investment, but does it make her local?
Next, the party eliminates Jane Pike, daughter of the incumbent. If anyone has learned the job at 'Nellie's elbow' it's Jane.
Let's leave Carole Galbraith in the last three to pretend that we really want a local candidate. Out pops Kitty. All done according to 'Old Mother Riley (Blair's)' instructions.
I hope Gordon Birtwhistle joins the race. It may teach the Labour party that manipulation does not work, especially when it's so blatantly obvious.
