ARSONISTS are being blamed for a fire at the former Manchester Jewish Grammar School site in Prestwich.
Shortly after 4pm on Wednesday (Feb 18), firefighters were called out to the derelict school in Charlton Avenue to deal with a blaze in a second floor classroom.
Four firemen wearing breathing apparatus searched the smoke-filled building for trespassers before extinguishing the flames using two jet hose reels. The police are now investigating the incident.
Staff and pupils moved out of the school last summer while the site is demolished to make way for a £5.4 million education complex. Neighbouring residents said the empty buildings were regularly targetted by vandals.
